TERPSICHORE’S DAUGHTERS
This provocative new series represents not only my first foray into encaustic, but photography. These brazen women you see modeling are part of the sassy collective of vaudevillian burlesque performers that make up the Eugene-based dance troupe Terpsichore’s Daughters — Terpsichore (pronounced Terp-sick-a-ree) is the Muse of dance and drama; by the river-god, Achelous, she bore the Sirens. Instantly captivated by this band of limber tattooed women (many of whom I know as fellow mothers), I asked to be privy to one of their practice sessions/dress-up parties. My intention was to take photos, which I would later use as reference in my paintings somewhere down the line. It was hard not to be inspired by their cheeky playfulness, vintage style, poise, and saucy sensuality. It wasn’t until I was reviewing the photos later that I began to consider the possibility of doing more with them. I had always wanted to try my hand at encaustic, and using the intimate trading card format seemed to fit the somewhat risqué theme. This series made for hours of “happy accidents” in the studio, and a renewed sense of joy and adventurism in my artistic life.

ABOUT THE WORK
As opposed to their religious predecessors, Claire Flint’s icon subjects tell a more personal narrative; many of which are inspired by her recent journey into motherhood. Paintings on canvas and gold leaf on wood panels combine to stylistically resemble late-Byzantine, early-Christian portrait icons. Primarily a self-taught painter, art has been Claire’s church and sanctuary since the age of seven.
